The
pretty mountain stream, which rises at the foot of Rocky Knob and Snowball
Mountain of the Craggy Mountain range in Buncombe County, North Carolina,
was written in old court records as Rims Creek, but by the 1850’s
it became known as Reems Creek. It wanders through the valley for about
twenty miles in an east to west direction before emptying into the French
Broad River about 8 miles north of Asheville. Reems Creek was one of the
first valleys settled by Europeans in the late 18th century. Early in
the 19th century, Reems Creek was noted for having one of the first water
powered wool mills and also became known for being the birthplace of Zebulon
Vance, civil war governor. His log cabin pictured here is a state historical
center and source for information that celebrates the heritage of this
pristine mountain valley. For more on our heritage explore the links below. |
